War of the Magi - Lore
Three gods descended from the heavens. Fearing one another's power, the gods began to war. Those mortals caught amongst their fighting became espers, and were forced to fight endlessly as slaves to the gods.
The Warring Triad are, according to legends, gods of magic and deities to the espers. Their names are Demon, Fiend and Goddess.
From "The War of the Triad":
Three gods descended from the heavens and, fearing one another's power, began to war. The mortals caught among their fighting became espers and were forced to fight as slaves to the gods. The gods realized the chaos their fighting was causing and agreed to seal away their power. They returned the espers' free will and turned themselves to stone with the last words left for the espers being, "Never must we be woken."
After the War of the Magi the espers fled the world to a new realm and took the Warring Triad's petrified remains with them. The Triad were placed in a delicate balance of power, and it was said catastrophe would occur if they were moved out of position.
With the Triad having left the World, Magic faded from existence and the world came to be known as "World of Balance", named after the Triad being in Balance.
From: "The End of the Magi"
Espers and humans lived in peace for a time until another war broke out when humans attempted to serize the espers' power. Humans learning to control the magic power came into existance, known as "Magi".
Battles ensued between espers and the Magi culminating in the battle of Gungnir.
Magi-allied espers and powerful Sorcerers defeated Lord Odin and stopped him in time at the Ancient Castle prompting the Espers to flee to a realm they created as sanctuary.
Left to their own conflicts, humans turned on the Magi, blaming the cause of the war on them, and hunting and killing them in masses. It is unknown whether any or how many survived.
